All About WeatherSeal: Caulking and Blisters

1 Gallon WeatherSeal Image

WeatherSeal is a completely different type of natural wood finish. Unlike regular watery stains, WeatherSeal is thick and rich which allows for a much neater application without the sloppy mess. When you properly mix WeatherSeal, it actually looks like pudding. Yet it dries to a rich, natural wood appearance. Plus, WeatherSeal is totally complete. All the protection is packed in ONE product! No need for buying and applying two separate coatings. And as a performer, WeatherSeal has earned a top rating by thousands of satisfied customers.

Caulking and Temperature Blisters

LATEX CAULK ADHESION: Certain water based caulks may not adhere as well to a WeatherSeal coated surface because of WeatherSeal exceptional water resistance. To satisfy adhesion of these types of caulks, lightly sand the areas of WeatherSeal that will come into contact with the caulk. Always apply a test bead to ensure compatibility!

DILUTION is not normally required. WeatherSeal may be diluted with 1 pint of mineral spirits per gallon of WeatherSeal in regions of the country where air quality regulations permit. When spraying,  WeatherSeal may be diluted at the same rates to improve spray atomization.

TEMPERATURE BLISTERS occur on rare occasions and usually when a 2nd coat of WeatherSeal is applied onto a cool surface that gets quickly heated (generally when nights are cool and days are warm). Should blisters occur, following the right steps to correct the situation will lead to a more acceptable and satisfying result.

New Soft Blisters: Soak a rag in mineral spirits. Wipe the solvent-soaked rag over the blister and pop and re-dissolve the skin of the blister. Hold the rag over the blister and gently rub. Once the skin of the blister is flattened and partially softened and dissolved, wait a few minutes for the mineral spirits to evaporate. Then with a clean, soft rag or sponge dipped in the same WeatherSeal color, dab the new stain by wiping around and feathering into the surrounding stained area. A few applications may be necessary to evenly blend the existing stain color. Allow an adequate time to dry between each application. (NOTE: Always wear solvent resistant rubber gloves and goggles when working with paint solvents)

Dried Hard Blisters: Peel off the skin of the blister. Soak a rag in mineral spirits and hold it over the opened blister, softening the edges. Then wipe around the blistered area with the solvent-soaked rag. The idea is to lightly soften and partially remove the stain that surrounds the blister. Then use a clean rag to dab the same color of WeatherSeal over the blister. Even out the stain by wiping around and feathering into the surrounding area. A few applications may be necessary to uniformly blend into the existing stain color. Allow an adequate time to dry between each application. (NOTE: Instead of mineral spirits you may use a stronger solvent such as VM&P Naptha or Xylol. Always wear solvent-resistant rubber gloves and goggles when working with paint solvents.)
